We love cute little otter pups in the summer even more than Otter Pops!
“Bob and Jillian, the Santa Barabara Zoo’s two parent Asian small-clawed otters, have produced another healthy litter of pups (not yet on view) and they recently opened their little eyes for the first time! The new litter of 3 females and 3 males was born on May 21 and they are being raised and cared for in their off-exhibit nesting box by mom and dad and the pair’s first litter of 5 pups born last August. As in the wild where the parents keep their pups in a den, these young otters will not leave their behind-the-scenes nesting area for several months; keepers estimate early August.”

“5 Bat-eared Fox kits were born to mother Singer & father Biko at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park on May 10th. The kits are currently on exhibit exhibit with the park’s Warthogs in the Heart of Africa area. The Bat-eared fox is a small African fox known for its enormous ears, which are over 5 inches (13 centimeters) long. The ears are full of blood vessels that shed heat and help keep the fox cool; they also give the animal a very good sense of hearing.”

And the Best Animal Dad of the Year Award goes to (drum roll please)…..the emperor penguin!
After mama penguin lays the egg, she goes to the sea to find food in preparation for when her hungry baby hatches. In the mean time, it’s up to good ol’ dad to keep the egg safe and warm. Not an easy task during the Antarctic winter but he does it all for love of his little one!
